वेदस्य ज्योतिषामयनं चक्षुः इत्युच्यते। यज्ञानां विधानं कालस्य अपेक्षां प्रति विद्यते। अतः ज्यौतिषं कालविज्ञापकशास्त्रम् इत्यप्युच्यते। यज्ञादि क्रियाकलापाः नक्षत्र, तिथि, वासर, पक्ष, मास, ऋतु, अयन, संवत्सरादयः निश्चितरूपेण ज्यौतिषशास्त्राधीनाः। अत एवोच्यते- वेदा हि यज्ञार्थमभिप्रवृत्ताः कालाभिपूर्वा विहिताश्च यज्ञाः। तस्मादिदं कालविधानशास्त्रं यो ज्योतिषं वेद स वेदयज्ञम्॥
