ĀVAṆI 1 AND ṢAṢṬHĪ VRATA - 18th August 2026

On 18 August 2026, Tamil Nadu observes Āvai 1, the first day of the auspicious Tamil month of Āvai. The day also coincides with Śukla-Paka aṣṭhī, making it a traditional aṣṭhī Viradham (aṣṭhī Vrata) day for devotees of Lord Murugan or Śrī Subrahmaya. Thus, the day brings together the Tamil solar calendar and the Sanskrit pañcāga lunar calendar. The aṣṭhī tithi continues until approximately 5:50 p.m. IST.

Āvai is the fifth month of the Tamil solar calendar and approximately corresponds to the Sanskrit solar month Siha (सिंह), beginning with the Sun’s entry into Leo, known as Siha-sakrānti. It may therefore be represented as A suitable Sanskrit expression is:

तमिलपञ्चाङ्गे आवणिमासस्य प्रारम्भः सूर्यस्य सिंहसंक्रमणेन सह भवति।

“According to the Tamil calendar, the beginning of Āvai occurs with the Sun’s transit into Siha (Leo).” Āvai is culturally important and hosts several Hindu festivals, including Vināyaka Caturthī.

aṣṭhī (षष्ठी) literally denotes the sixth lunar day or tithi of either fortnight. In the present case, it is Śukla-Paka aṣṭhī. aṣṭhī Viradham is traditionally observed through fasting, prayer and worship of Lord Murugan/Subrahmaya.

A significant Sanskrit reference occurs in the Śrī Skanda Saptashatī, attributed to the Laghūśakara-sahitā of the Skanda Purāa:

षष्ठी-व्रतं कृत्तिकार्क्ष-व्रतं कुजदिन-व्रतम् । षण्मुखस्य व्रतान्येवं बहूनि श्रेयसे नृणाम् ॥

aṣṭhī-vrata, the Kttikā-star observance and the Tuesday-vrata, along with many other vratas of amukha, are beneficial to human beings.” The same source describes Subrahmaya as षष्ठीप्रिय, “one who is fond of aṣṭhī,” establishing a devotional connection between aṣṭhī and amukha.

The Kumāra Tantra, another Sanskrit work on Subrahmaya worship, states:

दृक्सङ्ख्यान् भक्ष्यभोज्याद्यैः षष्ठ्यां सम्प्रीणयेद् विभुम् । पूजयेद् देवताभक्त्या कुमारान् ब्रह्मचारिणः ॥

The expression षष्ठ्यां सम्प्रीणयेद् विभुम् means, “One should propitiate the Lord on aṣṭhī.” It further states:

“Subrahmaya, worshipped by the Devas, quickly grants the devotee progeny, victory, strength, protection, long life, prosperity and fame.”

According to the Chennai Pañcāga, 18 August 2026 is Tuesday, Āvai 1 and Śukla-Paka aṣṭhī. The aṣṭhī tithi began on 17 August at approximately 5:00 p.m. and continued until about 5:50 p.m. on 18 August. Tamil calendar sources likewise identify the date as both Āvai 1 and aṣṭi Viradham.

Thus, 18 August 2026 is culturally significant because the beginning of the Tamil solar month Āvai coincides with Śukla aṣṭhī, a lunar tithi traditionally associated with Lord Murugan/Subrahmaya. The Sanskrit references from the Śrī Skanda Saptashatī and Kumāra Tantra provide textual support for the importance of aṣṭhī Vrata and demonstrate the close relationship between aṣṭhī worship and amukha/Subrahmaya devotion.
