INTERNATIONAL LITERACY DAY

 

Today, 8 september 2026, is international literacy day. A very suitable UNESCO quotation, “Literacy is a fundamental human right for all.” - UNESCO

UNESCO further emphasizes that literacy opens the door to other human rights, greater freedoms and global citizenship.

A Sanskrit quotation suitable for Literacy Day

A beautiful traditional Sanskrit maxim is:

विद्या ददाति विनयं, विनयाद् याति पात्रताम् । पात्रत्वाद् धनमाप्नोति, धनाद् धर्मं ततः सुखम् ॥

Meaning:
Education gives humility; from humility comes worthiness; from worthiness comes prosperity; from prosperity comes the ability to perform righteous duties; and from Dharma comes happiness.

This is particularly appropriate for International Literacy Day, because it presents education not merely as the ability to read and write, but as a pathway towards character, capability, prosperity, responsibility and happiness.

 “Literacy is not merely the ability to read words; it is the ability to understand the world, participate in society, and transform one’s life.”

For 2026, this can be connected beautifully with UNESCO's theme:

“Literacy for people, the planet and prosperity.”

साक्षरता ज्ञानस्य द्वारम्। ज्ञानं विकासस्य मूलम्। विकासः समृद्धेः मार्गः। समृद्धिः सुखस्य आधारः॥

“Literacy is the doorway to knowledge; knowledge is the foundation of development; development is the path to prosperity; and prosperity is a foundation for well-being.”

This would be especially suitable for any learning, since it connects the modern concept of literacy with the Indian understanding of विद्या (knowledge), विनय (humility), धर्म (righteousness), and सुख (well-being).
