इतिहासः इत्यस्य निरुक्तदिशा "इति ह आस" अर्थात् इत्थम् आसीत् उत एवं समभवत् इत्यर्थसिद्धिः। अतः पुरा संभूतानि चरितानि बहूनि इतिहास तथा पुराणात्मकानि भवन्ति। वस्तुतः आख्यानमित्यस्य पुरातनकथनमित्येव भवति। संस्कृतभाषायां विद्यमानानि कथाख्यानादीनि इतिहासपुराणसंज्ञया, इतराणि अन्यानि काव्यसंज्ञया च व्यपदिश्यन्ते। संस्कृतभाषायां द्वे इतिहासे भवतः। ते श्रीमद्रामायणं श्रीमन्महाभारतञ्च। तयोः इतिहासयोः द्वयोः श्रीमद्रामायणं प्रथमं तथा श्रीमन्महाभारतं द्वितीयमिति सर्वपण्डितपिण्डितसम्मतम्॥
