उत्तरायण संप्राप्तिः दक्षिणायण संपूर्तिः
संक्रमं मासयोः द्वयोः संक्रान्तिः इति कथ्यते
uttarayana sampraptih dakshinayana sampurtihi,
sankramam masayordwayoh sankrantih iti kathyate!
The onset of Uttarayana, after the Dakshinayana's completion, the blend of the two months called Sankramana. (Margasirsha and Poosha months) This is termed as Makara Sankranti because the blend occurs in the Makara Lagna.
Mythological significance of Uttarayana is that in Mahabharata, Bhishma waited for the commencement of Uttarayana to attain the lotus feet of the Lord, so as to attain salvation.
Harvest Festival or Thanks giving to nature or Pongal - are the other names of Makara Sankranti.
On this day, the food is offered to the Sun God as a way of Thanking him for his light and praying him to give his light which is needed for the healthy harvest. The food is prepared from the fresh yields of the crops like paddy, Sugarcane, jaggery and the roots of rhizomes. All this season's fresh grown vegetables are included in the Menu. Pumpkin both white and yellow, Raw-banana, Sweet potato, Yam, colocasia, broad beans etc., Plantain leaves are used to serve food.
