THE KATHĀSARITSĀGARA: AN OCEAN
OF INTERTWINED STORIES
The Kathāsaritsāgara,
meaning “The Ocean of the Streams of Stories,” is one of the greatest
story collections of medieval Sanskrit literature. It was composed by Somadeva
in the 11th century CE in Kashmir. The work is based mainly on the lost Bṛhatkathā of Guṇāḍhya and represents an important
stage in the continuous development of Indian storytelling.
The work contains numerous
interconnected narratives, using the frame-story technique, in which one
story leads to another. Its stories include kings, merchants, ascetics, clever
thieves, lovers, talking animals, supernatural beings and adventurous heroes.
The central narrative is associated with Udayana and his son Naravāhanadatta,
but within this larger framework are hundreds of independent tales, fables,
anecdotes and popular narratives.
The Kathāsaritsāgara is
valuable not only for its literary imagination but also for its vivid portrayal
of social life and everyday culture in medieval India. Somadeva combines
fantasy with realistic descriptions of people, customs, occupations and social
relationships. His literary approach may be viewed in relation to the principle
of Aucitya (“appropriateness”) discussed by Kṣemendra in his Aucityavicāracarcā.
The work also stands alongside
Buddhasvāmin’s Bṛhatkathāślokasaṃgraha and Kṣemendra’s Bṛhatkathāmañjarī. Its complete English
translation by C. H. Tawney, later extensively annotated by N. M.
Penzer, helped introduce this remarkable Sanskrit narrative tradition to a
wider readership.
