NALA (नलः) – THE
NOBLE KING OF NISHADHA
King
Nala, the ruler of Niṣadha,
is celebrated for his virtue, righteousness, skill, and deep love for
Damayantī. His story is a timeless lesson on dharma, patience, and resilience
in adversity.
Nala’s Virtue and Character
नलो नाम नरश्रेष्ठो निषधेषु महायशाः ।
धर्मज्ञः सत्यसन्धश्च वीरसेनसुतो बली ॥
Nalo nāma naraśreṣṭho
niṣadheṣu
mahāyaśāḥ
|
Dharmajñaḥ
satyasaṁdhaśca
vīrasenasuto balī ||
Nala, the noble king of Niṣadha, was renowned for
righteousness, truthfulness, and strength.
Love of Nala and Damayantī
दमयन्ती नलं वीरं रूपेणाप्रतिमं भुवि
। हृदि कृत्वा वव्रे भर्तारं देवतानपि लङ्घ्य सा ॥
Damayantī nalaṁ
vīraṁ
rūpeṇāpratimaṁ
bhuvi |
Hṛdi
kṛtvā
vavre bhartāraṁ
devatān api laṅghya
sā ||
Damayantī chose Nala as her husband,
even rejecting the gods, due to her deep love.
The Trial of Fate (Kali’s
Influence)
कलिना पीडितो राजा नलो धर्मपथाच्युतः
। द्यूतेन राज्यं नष्ट्वा दुःखमार्गमवाप ह ॥
Kalinā pīḍito
rājā nalo dharmapathācyutaḥ
|
Dyūtena rājyaṁ
naṣṭvā
duḥkhamārgam
avāpa ha ||
Under the influence of Kali, Nala lost
his kingdom in gambling and fell into hardship.
Patience in Adversity
धैर्यं सर्वत्र साधनं न हि धैर्यसमं
बलम् । नलः क्लेशान् समासाद्य न च धर्मात् प्रमाद्यति ॥
Dhairyaṁ sarvatra
sādhanam na hi dhairyasamaṁ
balam |
Nalaḥ
kleśān samāsādya na ca dharmāt pramādyati ||
Patience is the greatest strength; even
in suffering, Nala never abandoned righteousness.
Restoration and Triumph
पुनर्लब्धं राज्यं श्रीमान् नलो
धर्मेण संयुतः । दमयन्त्या सह प्रीत्या सुखमासीत् पुनः प्रभुः ॥
Punarlabdhaṁ rājyaṁ śrīmān nalo
dharmeṇa
saṁyutaḥ |
Damayantyā saha prītyā sukham āsīt punaḥ prabhuḥ ||
Through virtue and perseverance, Nala
regained his kingdom and lived happily with Damayantī.
Conclusion
The
story of Nala teaches that even the righteous may face hardships, but with
patience, integrity, and faith, one can overcome fate and regain lost glory.
